Sebastianismo

Sebastianism
Sebastianism, a mytho-religious phenomenon that emerged with the disappearance of King Sebastian in 1578, transcends its Portuguese origin (in dialogue with analogous phenomena on the Iberian Peninsula) and manifests itself in a unique way, with its own specificities, in the Brazilian Northeast, especially in movements such as Pedra Bonita, Canudos, and Serra do Rodeador in the 19th century. This work analyzes Sebastianism as a cross-border category that combines myth, religion, and politics, exploring its prophetic, literary, and social implications. The research criticizes the reduction of the phenomenon to labels such as "messianic" or "millenarian," interpreted through an exclusively sociological lens (in a "sociology of backwardness"), proposing instead an approach from Religious Studies (albeit interdisciplinary, integrating History, Anthropology, etc.) that prioritizes the analysis of the Sebastic mythopoetics in its recreations. The influence or persistence of recreated elements from the medieval Iberian mentality, the presence of symbols such as the "Hidden One" and the "Desired One," and the tension between the hinterland (sertão) and the coast are highlighted. Despite its historical relevance, Sebastianism loses strength in the 21st century, diluted in modern narratives, but remains latent in the collective imagination.
